School Day

Assemblies and Meditation

At Ankuram Academy, each school day begins with a morning assembly, which serves as a platform for important announcements, student recognition, and fostering a sense of community. These assemblies are often conducted by the students, providing them with valuable opportunities to develop leadership skills and public speaking abilities. Classwise performances and presentations are a regular feature, allowing students to showcase their talents and learn from each other. After the assembly, includes a brief meditation session, helping students start their day with focus and calm. The importance of meditation for students cannot be overstated; it aids in reducing stress and anxiety, enhances concentration, and promotes emotional well-being. Regular practice of meditation also helps our students develop a positive mindset, which is crucial for academic success and personal growth. By incorporating meditation into the daily routine, we aim to equip our students with tools for lifelong mental and emotional resilience.

The typical school day at Ankuram is structured to provide a balanced mix of academic learning, physical activity, and personal development. Classes begin at 10:00 am and end at 5:00 pm. There are short breaks between classes and a longer break for lunch. Students should arrive at school no later than 10:05 am and depart promptly by 5:15 pm, unless participating in after-school activities. A variety of clubs, sports, and enrichment programs are offered after school. Participation is encouraged to develop new skills and interests. However, the students participating in any activities at the school have to manage their own transport.

Expectations and Behaviour Guidelines

Ankuram seeks to promote a school culture of mutual respect and civility, free from harassment and disruptive, demeaning, intimidating, threatening, or aggressive behavior. Therefore, we expect and encourage those in our community to work together with respect and consideration so our students can reach their highest potential.

  • Engage actively in your learning and strive for academic excellence.
  • Follow all school rules and policies.
  • Contribute positively to the school community.

Our Code of Conduct or Behaviour Guidelines sets the standards for behavior that all students must follow to ensure a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment. Key guidelines include:

  • Respect: Treat all members of the school community with kindness and consideration. Respect the diversity of backgrounds, opinions, and cultures. Show respect for yourself, your peers, teachers, and school staff.
  • Integrity: Be honest and fair in all your actions. Do not engage in cheating, plagiarism, or any form of dishonesty.
  • Safety: Follow all safety rules and procedures. Report any hazards or unsafe behavior to school staff.
  • Responsibility: Take responsibility for your actions and behavior. Take responsibility for your personal belongings and school property. Keep the school clean and tidy.
  • Attendance: Attend all classes regularly and on time. Notify the school of any absences in advance.
  • Dress Code: Adhere to the school’s uniform policy and dress appropriately for school activities.

We expect you to meet these expectations, to help create a supportive and productive learning environment for everyone.

Off-Campus Behaviors

The school does not wish to unnecessarily involve itself in a student’s off-campus behaviors. However, the school rules and regulations apply at all times a student is enrolled in our school. In addition, the school reserves the right to take action to the extent that off-campus behaviors impact the individual’s ability to continue at Ankuram or impact other students’ or employees’ ability to be comfortable at the school. We expect students to avoid all types of behaviors that may be harmful to their body, self-esteem, or health.

Reporting of Child Abuse

At Ankuram Academy, we take our responsibility for child protection very seriously. We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all our students. Therefore, we urge all members of our school community to report any suspected instances of physical abuse, emotional abuse, emotional deprivation, physical neglect, inadequate supervision, sexual abuse, or exploitation. If you suspect any form of abuse, please report it immediately. We will thoroughly investigate all reports and take appropriate action to protect the child involved.

Unacceptable Behavior

Unacceptable behavior undermines the safety and integrity of our school community. Examples of unacceptable behavior include, but are not limited to:

  • Bullying, harassment, or any form of discrimination.
  • Physical or verbal aggression.
  • Theft or vandalism.
  • Substance abuse (alcohol, drugs, etc.).
  • Academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism).
  • Disrespect towards teachers, staff, or fellow students.
  • Unauthorized use of electronic devices during school hours.

Disciplinary Action for Unacceptable Behavior

Students who engage in unacceptable behavior will face disciplinary actions designed to address the behavior and prevent its recurrence. Disciplinary actions may include:

  • Verbal Warning: A discussion between the student and a teacher or school administrator.
  • Written Warning: A formal warning documented in the student’s record.
  • Detention: Time spent in a supervised area outside of regular class hours.
  • Loss of Privileges: Temporary suspension of certain privileges, such as participation in extracurricular activities or access to specific areas of the school.
  • Suspension: Temporary removal from school for a specified period.
  • Expulsion: Permanent removal from the school.

Disciplinary actions will be proportionate to the severity and frequency of the misconduct. Our goal is to help students learn from their mistakes and make better choices in the future. Parents or guardians will be notified of any significant disciplinary actions taken.

Behaviour contract

All students are required to sign a Behaviour Contract at the start of the school year. This contract is a formal agreement between the student, their parents or guardians, and the school. It outlines the expectations for student behavior and the consequences of not adhering to these expectations. The Behaviour Contract includes:

  • Acknowledgement of the school’s Code of Conduct and Behaviour Guidelines.
  • Commitment to follow the rules and meet the expectations set forth by the school.
  • Understanding of the disciplinary actions that may be taken if rules are violated.

Anti-Harassment Policy

Ankuram is committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment free from harassment and discrimination. Our Anti-Harassment Policy outlines the following:

  • Definition of Harassment: Harassment includes any unwelcome behavior, such as bullying, verbal or physical abuse, sexual harassment, or discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or disability.
  • Reporting Harassment: Students who experience or witness harassment should report it immediately to a teacher, counselor, or school administrator.
  • Investigation and Response: All reports of harassment will be taken seriously and investigated promptly. Appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken against those found guilty of harassment.
  • Support for Victims: The school will provide support and resources to students who have been harassed, including counseling and mediation services.

Social Media Policy

Ankuram Academy recognizes the significant role that social media plays in communication and information sharing. While social media platforms offer valuable opportunities for connection and engagement, it is crucial that all members of our school community use these tools responsibly and respectfully. The School’s Social Media Policy aims to guide students, staff, and parents in using social media in a way that reflects the values and standards of our institution.

Students are expected to conduct themselves online with the same level of respect and integrity as they would in person. This includes refraining from posting harmful, offensive, or inappropriate content that could damage the reputation of individuals or the school. Additionally, any form of cyberbullying, harassment, or misuse of personal information will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action. Students should be mindful of their privacy settings and the potential long-term impact of their online activities.

Staff members are also required to maintain professional boundaries and ensure that their social media use does not conflict with their responsibilities or the school’s mission. The sharing of confidential information or discussing school-related matters inappropriately on social media is strictly prohibited. Parents are encouraged to model positive social media behavior and to monitor their children’s online activities to ensure a safe and constructive digital environment.

Non-Discrimination Policy

Ankuram Academy is committed to providing an inclusive and equitable environment where every member of our community is treated with respect and dignity. Our Non-Discrimination Policy reflects our dedication to fostering a school culture that values diversity and promotes equal opportunities for all. We do not tolerate discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any other characteristic protected by law.

We believe that a diverse and inclusive school environment enriches the educational experience and prepares students for a global society. All students have the right to learn in an environment free from harassment and bias. We strive to ensure that our policies, programs, and practices support this commitment and that any instances of discrimination are addressed promptly and effectively. Students, staff, and parents are encouraged to report any concerns or incidents of discrimination to the appropriate school authorities, confident that their reports will be taken seriously and handled with care.

Ankuram Academy is dedicated to continuous improvement in our efforts to eliminate discrimination and promote inclusivity. We provide regular training and resources to our staff to ensure they are equipped to support our diverse student body and foster a culture of acceptance and respect. By working together, we can create a safe and supportive environment where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and reach their fullest potential.

Health and safety procedure

The health and safety of our students and staff are of utmost importance. The school health clinic provides basic medical care, first aid, and health counseling. Students who feel unwell should visit the clinic. Students having minor health problems can visit our infirmary for general medicines. Medications will be administered by the school nurse. However, any issues needing a doctor’s advice will be referred to the nearest hospital with the parent’s consent.

Regular evacuation drills are conducted to ensure everyone knows how to respond in an emergency. Students are encouraged to practice good hygiene, such as regular handwashing, to prevent the spread of illness.

Mental Health Resources

Supporting the mental well-being of students is a top priority at Ankuram. Professional counselors are available to provide confidential support for a range of mental health issues, including stress, anxiety, depression, and relationship problems. Health and Wellness Department regularly organizes workshops and programs on topics such as stress management, mindfulness, and healthy coping strategies. Teachers, parents, and students can refer someone to the counseling services. Self-referrals are also encouraged. Immediate support is available for students experiencing a mental health crisis. Emergency contacts and procedures are in place to ensure quick and effective response. Information sessions and resources are provided for parents to help them support their children’s mental health at home.

Accidents

At Ankuram Academy, we understand that accidents can happen despite our best efforts to maintain a safe environment. In the event of an accident, our trained staff administers first aid immediately to address minor injuries. For more serious incidents, the student is taken to the nearest hospital unless parents have specified a preferred hospital. We promptly contact the parents or guardians to inform them of the situation. Once the parents or guardians arrive at the hospital, we hand over the child along with all relevant details about the incident and the care provided. Our priority is always the health and safety of our students, ensuring they receive the necessary medical attention as quickly as possible.

Scholarships: Merit and Need based

We offer various scholarships to support our students’ educational journeys. Merit-Based Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional academic performance, leadership, and extracurricular involvement. Need-Based Scholarships are provided to students who require financial assistance to continue their education. These are based on family income and other financial criteria. Detailed information about eligibility criteria and application deadlines is available in the school office and on our website.

Re-Enrollment and Withdrawal

Re-Enrollment

As the academic session draws to a close, we send re-enrollment letters/forms to parents and guardians, requesting them to confirm if they wish to continue their child’s education at Ankuram Academy for the next academic year. This process helps us manage class sizes and announce any vacant seats. Given our commitment to maintaining the quality of education, we have limited seats in each class. Fresh admissions primarily occur in Grade I, with subsequent classes up to Class Seven dependent on available vacancies. Parents must complete and return the re-enrollment form to secure their child’s place. There is NO re-admission fee charged. However, Ankuram reserves the right to withdraw an offer of re-enrollment if there are significant academic, disciplinary, or mental health issues that the school cannot adequately address, or if the student’s conduct is inconsistent with the school’s values and objectives and all our corrective resources are exhausted. We provide advance notice if there is a possibility of non-renewal of enrollment.

Withdrawal

A positive and constructive working relationship between Ankuram Academy and the students is crucial for fulfilling our educational mission. Consequently, the school reserves the right to request the withdrawal of any student or deny enrollment or re-enrollment under specific circumstances. If a student’s behavior or performance indicates an unwillingness or inability to thrive within our community, or if there is a lack of cooperation from the student, parent, guardian, or anyone closely associated with the student, we may find it necessary to take such action. Furthermore, if the involvement of a parent or guardian is deemed not in the best interests of the student or the school, we may also request withdrawal.

Withdrawal Procedure

If a student needs to withdraw from Ankuram Academy, the following procedure must be followed:

  • Parents or guardians must notify the school administration in writing of the intent to withdraw.
  • The student must return all school property, such as textbooks and library books, and settle any outstanding dues.
  • The school will provide the student’s academic records and any other necessary documents upon completion of the withdrawal process.
  • An exit interview with the student and their parents or guardians may be conducted to understand the reasons for withdrawal and gather feedback to improve the school’s services.

Food Policy

Healthy eating is essential for academic and physical performance. Our food policy ensures students have access to nutritious meals and snacks. The school cafeteria offers a variety of healthy meal options for breakfast and lunch. Menus are updated regularly and include vegetarian and allergy-sensitive choices. Students can take coupons from the counter in the cafeteria to buy lunch. Students are NOT ALOWED to bring their lunches.

Students with food allergies must inform the school. The cafeteria staff will take necessary precautions to avoid cross-contamination. Students are advised to refrain from sharing food with other students to minimize the spread of viruses and the risk of allergic reactions. Students will practice etiquette and clean-up skills during mealtimes.

Bus rules

For students using the school bus service, the following rules ensure safety and orderliness:

Students must be at their designated bus stop on time. Parents are responsible for ensuring their child is supervised until the bus arrives. Students must remain seated, keep noise levels low, and follow the bus staff’s instructions. Misbehavior may result in loss of bus privileges. In case of an emergency, students must follow the staff’s instructions and evacuate the bus calmly and quickly if required.

In our school buses, there are sisters and helpers in addition to the drivers. These sisters and helpers ensure that the children reach their homes safely, either by handing over the child to guardians or escorting the child to enter their home gates.

Safe Bus Riding:

Students at Ankuram Academy are expected to conduct themselves according to the Ankuram Behavior Standards and Expectations. This means practicing virtues such as being respectful, responsible, and safe in all school settings, including on the bus. Following school rules on the bus is essential not only for developing good character but also for ensuring students’ safety. Proper behavior on the bus is fundamental to safety, as unruly behavior can distract the driver and compromise everyone’s safety.

Bus Conduct Regulations:

  1. The bus driver is in complete charge of the bus.
  2. Drivers have the authority to assign students specific seats on the bus.
  3. Students may get off the buses only at school and at their regular stops. Any exception requires authorization from parents, a school administrator, and the transportation department.
  4. No eating or drinking is allowed on the bus.
  5. Glass items, animals, skateboards, cricket bats, hockey sticks, or any other item of safety concern shall not be transported. Bagged athletic equipment may be transported but must be under the control of the bus driver.
  6. For minor offenses, bus drivers will follow the established four-step minor offense process.
  7. Problems of a serious nature must be reported promptly by the staffs to the vice principal of the school, which the student attends.
  8. The vice principal will address the matter with the problematic student and, if necessary, the parents.
  9. If the problem cannot be resolved, the vice principal will notify the parents that the student has forfeited the privilege of transportation by bus.
  10. Forfeiture of bus transportation privileges does not change the requirement for compulsory attendance. Parents/guardians are responsible for transporting the student to and from school if bus privileges are forfeited.

The student’s privilege to transportation by bus may be restored by the vice principal after a satisfactory agreement is established with the Transportation Operations Manager.

Specific Rules for Students while on the School Bus:

  • When boarding a bus, students should go directly to their seats and be seated.
  • All students must conduct themselves in an orderly manner at all times.
  • Students are not to move around while the bus is in motion.
  • Students will not extend any part of their body out of the bus window at any time.
  • Loud talking, throwing of objects, or any other act to distract the driver’s attention will not be allowed.
  • Writing, cutting, scratching, or defacing the interior or exterior of the bus is prohibited. Students responsible will pay for damages.
  • Students are to keep the bus clean. Paper or trash should not be left on the floor. The bus staff are responsible for cleanliness and ventilation of the bus.
  • Students cannot bring anything on the bus that would prevent another student from having a place to sit or that would block the aisle or door of the bus.
  • Bus staff are concerned with student welfare, comfort, and safety.
  • Students must follow directions the first time they are given, keep all parts of their body and all objects inside the bus, and avoid leaning out the window.
  • They should keep hands, feet, and objects to themselves, sit in their seats, wear their safety belts, and stay seated with feet on the floor while the bus is in motion.
  • No cursing, swearing, or loud talking is allowed. Pushing, shoving, or fighting is prohibited. Harmful objects, such as drugs, tobacco, vapes, alcohol, and weapons, must be kept off the bus.
  • Students should not litter, write on, or damage the bus in any way and should refrain from using rude gestures or teasing anyone on the bus.

School Uniform

The school uniform promotes a sense of community and equality. Uniforms should be clean, neat, and properly fitted. On designated non-uniform days, students must dress appropriately, adhering to the school’s dress code policy.

Proper school uniform must be worn on all class days and for all school functions and school related activities. Ornaments and jewelry are not allowed in the school. Pants and Skirts must be worn 1 inch above the waist.

Personal Belongings

Students are responsible for their personal belongings. They must not bring valuable items to school. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Students should use lockers or designated storage areas for their personal belongings. Additionally, they should ensure that all their items are labeled with their names to prevent mix-ups. Students are encouraged to keep unnecessary items at home to minimize the risk of loss or theft.

Lockers

The school provides all students with locker space in their homerooms or in the corridors outside the homeroom. No locks are kept as the entire school is under CCTV surveillance, and we aim to teach the children honesty. Students should keep their books and binders in their lockers and not in the desks, as we have subject-wise classrooms, meaning other students may use your desks for studying. Essential books and notebooks should be carried in their bags while moving to different subject rooms. Students are responsible for keeping their belongings either in their lockers or bags. The school is not responsible for items lost or stolen from student lockers or the changing room, or for anything left on shelves, desks, or around public spaces. It is crucial that students ensure their lockers are kept tidy and organized to prevent any issues.

Use of School Facilities

Central AC System: The school has a central AC system to protect students from heat and cold. It also has fans and large windows to ensure a conducive learning environment. The right temperature and ventilation contribute significantly to teaching and learning by maintaining comfort and focus.

To use the facility sensibly, students are expected to:

  • Ensure that windows and doors are closed when the AC is on to maintain the desired temperature.
  • Only authorized personnel should adjust the thermostat to ensure that the temperature remains comfortable for everyone.
  • If there are any issues with the AC or fans, or anything else in the classrooms, students should report them immediately to the administration.
  • Make sure the fans and AC units are turned off when classrooms are not in use to conserve energy.
  • Handle all equipment with care to avoid damage. Do not tamper with AC units or fans.

Let’s ensure that the school’s facilities remain in good condition and continue to provide a comfortable learning environment for all students. Maintaining the right temperature and ventilation in classrooms helps create an environment where students can concentrate and participate actively in their lessons. Comfortable students are more likely to engage in their work, ask questions, and perform well academically. Furthermore, a well-maintained environment supports the health and well-being of both students and teachers, reducing distractions and absenteeism caused by discomfort.

Carrying Money

We do not see any other reason why students should bring money to school besides buying their lunch. Students must carry minimal cash. [Use prepaid lunch cards or other cashless systems when available.] Do not share or display money openly. Report any lost or stolen money to a teacher or school administrator immediately.

Mobile Phone

To minimize distractions and enhance learning, the use of mobile phones is restricted. In case of emergencies, students may bring their phones with permission from a teacher or administrator but deposit it at the front desk or with the coordinators. Unauthorized use of mobile phones during school hours may result in confiscation and disciplinary action.

Learning guidelines

To support your academic success, we provide the following learning guidelines:

A conducive study environment is required at home too: We suggest creating a quiet, organized, and distraction-free study area at home. All students need to use a planner or calendar to keep track of assignments, tests, and deadlines for good time management. We expect all students engage in active learning with the material actively by taking notes, asking questions, and participating in discussions. Utilize all the resources including the school library, online resources, and teacher office hours to support your learning.

Instruction Methods

Our teachers employ a variety of instructional methods to cater to different learning styles and ensure a comprehensive understanding of the material. While lectures are used to provide foundational knowledge and key concepts, we mostly include collaborative activities to enhance problem-solving skills and teamwork. Practical exercises, experiments, and projects to apply theoretical knowledge and the use of digital tools and platforms to enhance learning and engagement are common practices.

Feedback and Marking Procedure

We believe feedback is essential for student growth and improvement. Our feedback and marking procedure:

  • Teachers will provide feedback on assignments, tests, and projects promptly.
  • Feedback will highlight strengths, areas for improvement, and specific suggestions for enhancement.
  • Clear and consistent grading criteria will be communicated to students at the beginning of each course or assignment.

Attendance:

Regular attendance is crucial for academic success and personal development. At Ankuram, we use a combination of traditional and biometric systems to ensure accurate attendance records.

Attendance is taken daily in each class. Students are expected to be present and on time for all classes and school activities. Absences are recorded and monitored regularly. We use a biometric system to track attendance accurately. Students must scan their ID Cards upon entering and leaving the school premises.

If a student is unable to attend school, parents or guardians must notify the school office by phone or email as soon as possible, providing a valid reason for the absence. For extended absences, a written explanation and a doctor’s note (if applicable) is required.

Academic responsibilities

Students are expected to take an active role in their education and fulfill their academic responsibilities, which include: attending all classes and completing assignments on time and participating actively in class discussions and group activities. Preparing for and taking all tests and exams seriously. Seeking help from teachers or tutors when needed. Maintaining an organized study schedule and managing time effectively.

Academic Ethics

Academic integrity is a cornerstone of our educational philosophy. Students must adhere to the highest standards of honesty and integrity in all their academic work. Any form of cheating, including copying from others, using unauthorized materials during exams, or assisting others in cheating, is strictly prohibited. Presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, without proper citation, is considered plagiarism and is not tolerated. While collaboration on group projects is encouraged, individual assignments must be completed independently unless specified otherwise by the teacher.

Homework

Homework is an important part of the learning process, reinforcing classroom instruction and providing opportunities for independent study. Students are expected to complete all homework assignments on time and to the best of their ability. Teachers are available to provide guidance and answer questions about homework during school hours. Homework will be regularly reviewed and assessed to monitor student progress and understanding.

Homework Schedule: Each subject will have 10 minutes of homework when assigned and no classes will have longer than 90 minutes.

Class 1: No homework. Workbooks completed in class under teacher guidance. Or, a maximum of one worksheet is given to complete in 10 minutes.

Class 2: 10-15 minutes homework of reading and/or writing worksheets.

Class 3: Math + 1 subject a day

Class 4: Math + 2 subjects a day

Class 5: Math + 3 subjects a day

Class 6: Math + 4 subjects a day

Class 7: Math + 4 subjects a day

Classes 8, 9, & 10: No specific conditions apply

Class teachers must collaborate to create the homework schedule, which should be displayed on the side of the board.

Project Work

Project work allows students to explore topics in-depth, develop research skills, and apply knowledge creatively. Clear guidelines and objectives will be provided for each project, including deadlines and evaluation criteria. Many projects will involve teamwork, encouraging collaboration and the sharing of ideas. Students may be required to present their projects to the class, developing public speaking and presentation skills. These projects will be assessed in a set format to ensure consistency and fairness. Project work is a major teaching strategy at Ankuram Academy, aimed at fostering critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and independent learning. By engaging in project work, students can connect theoretical knowledge with practical application, enhancing their overall educational experience. This hands-on approach also helps students to take ownership of their learning and develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

Extracurricular Activities

Ankuram Academy offers a wide range of extracurricular activities (ECA) to encourage students to explore their interests beyond academics. Opportunities are given to join school sports teams such as basketball, futsal, swimming, volleyball, and more. Clubs and activities focusing on music, drama, art, dance, environment, and mechanics are also available. Intellectual clubs like math club, science club, debate team, and robotics club stimulate intellectual curiosity and academic excellence. We are known for our ECA classes and place a significant emphasis on them. All students from classes 1 to 7 are required to join all ECA classes as per their routine. From classes 8 to 12, participation becomes more interest-based, allowing students to choose activities they are passionate about. This approach ensures that all students gain basic knowledge of various subjects while having the opportunity to master specific areas as they grow, becoming well-rounded individuals.

Music

The music curriculum at Ankuram Academy covers three main areas: concepts, expression, and skills. Three music programs are presented each year in our specially designed music room. Anyone recovering from a serious illness, operation, or accident may be excused if they present documentation from a physician. Notes from parents or guardians will be honored for one class only. Excuses should be given to the nurse. We offer a variety of sports including futsal, basketball, table tennis, cricket, volleyball, and swimming. We also have karate as a martial art. All students from classes 1 to 7 are required to join all the sports classes as per their schedule. This approach ensures that all students develop physical fitness and skills while having the opportunity to specialize in sports they are passionate about.

Student Recognition

At Ankuram Academy, we believe in recognizing and celebrating the achievements and efforts of our students. Regular awards are presented during school assemblies for various accomplishments, including academic excellence, sports achievements, community service, and leadership. Each term, we acknowledge students who achieve high academic performance, fostering a culture of academic dedication and hard work.

In addition to term awards, we have monthly recognition programs to honor students who exhibit outstanding behavior, effort, and school spirit. These recognitions highlight the importance of not only achieving excellence but also demonstrating consistent effort and a positive attitude. We believe that celebrating these qualities encourages students to strive for their personal best and contributes to a supportive and motivating school environment.

Furthermore, we have special awards for students who show remarkable improvement, creativity, and collaboration. These awards ensure that all aspects of student growth are valued and appreciated. By recognizing a wide range of achievements and efforts, we aim to inspire all students to reach their full potential and contribute positively to the school community.

Trips and events

We believe that educational trips and school events are essential in enhancing learning and providing valuable experiences outside the classroom. Field trips are organized throughout the year to complement the curriculum, including visits to museums, historical sites, science centers, and other relevant locations. Opportunities for longer trips, such as camping, cultural exchanges, and international trips, are offered to broaden students’ horizons and provide them with unique learning experiences.

Annual events such as sports day, talent shows, science fairs, cultural festivals, food and flower festivals encourage student participation and foster school spirit. These events not only provide a platform for students to showcase their talents but also help build a sense of community within the school. Parental consent is required for all trips to ensure that parents are fully aware of and supportive of their children’s participation. The school ensures that all trips are well-supervised and adhere to strict safety guidelines.

These support and development programs are designed to help students grow academically, personally, and socially, preparing them for future success in their careers and communities.

Benefits of Academic Travel

The benefits of travel are countless, and nearly all of our students consider Ankuram trips some of the most memorable experiences they have had at the school. These trips help students to forge relationships with others and enjoy places rich in history. They encourage teamwork and bonding and allow students to stretch themselves in all areas. By exposing students to new environments and cultures, academic travel fosters a deeper understanding of the world and enhances their overall educational experience.

Student Responsibilities on Field Trips

Students are reminded that a field trip is an extension of the school day, and all school policies and rules apply.

  • Students are required to wear their school uniform unless given permission not to do so by the Principal.
  • During free time, students must be in groups of two or more to ensure safety.
  • During overnight trips, no male students may enter a female student’s room and vice versa. Students must comply with room assignment rules set by the trip in-charge.
  • The trip in-charge may set additional rules to address the specific needs of each trip or location. Students must comply with these rules and regulations.
  • Students must get written permission from their parents for trips. Any medical conditions must be disclosed, and a Release Form signed by the parent or guardian.
  • Students must travel both to and from the field trip location under the supervision of a chaperone.

Expectations During Academic Travel: All school rules apply during academic travel. If you can’t do it at school, you can’t do it during off-campus travel. Violating school rules will result in consequences decided by the chaperones, trip leader, vice principal, and principal. Students are expected to uphold the same standards of behavior and respect as they do on school premises, ensuring a positive and safe experience for everyone involved.

Citizenship and Integrity Education

At Ankuram Academy, we believe that school education forms the foundation of a well-rounded and meaningful life. Citizenship and integrity education are essential components of our curriculum, as they cultivate the moral and ethical values necessary for students to become responsible and engaged members of society. Through various programs and activities, we aim to instill a sense of duty, honesty, and respect for others, ensuring that our students grow into individuals who not only excel academically but also contribute positively to their communities and the world at large.

Community Service

Service learning is a cornerstone of our educational philosophy at Ankuram Academy. It helps students develop leadership and organizational skills, as well as academic and citizenship skills, while fostering a strong work ethic. Through community service, students gain a sense of independence and awareness of the necessity and value of serving others. All students are required to complete a minimum number of community service hours each academic year, which are documented and submitted to the school office for approval and credit. Our school partners with various local organizations to provide a wide range of service opportunities, ensuring that students can engage in meaningful and impactful projects. By participating in community service, students not only support Ankuram and the local community but also build a foundation for lifelong civic engagement.

The Reading Program at Ankuram Academy is designed to ignite a passion for reading among our students, allowing them to discover the magic of reading for pleasure. To foster this love for reading, we have incorporated a dedicated reading period into our academic schedule, ensuring that students have ample time to immerse themselves in books. Each term, students are required to write a book review, which helps them articulate their thoughts and reflections on their reading experiences.

The goals of the Reading Program include:

  • Expanding students’ knowledge and understanding of different cultures, ideas, and perspectives.
  • Encouraging students to find joy in reading and develop a lifelong habit.
  • Improving language skills through exposure to diverse vocabulary and sentence structures.
  • Strengthening reading comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar through consistent practice.

Our well-stocked library caters to all age groups, offering a wide range of books for students to explore. Students can check out books during their library classes and recess. It is important to note that taking books from the library without proper checkout is considered stealing, and lost books will incur a fine equivalent to the book’s cost.

Every class has reading corners with age-appropriate books under the Nepali and English language teachers’ care. Every student has to read at least the required number of books and write a review of one book each term, which is evaluated and included in the term results.

Class Representatives and Student Council

Class representatives are pivotal in fostering communication between students and the school administration. Elected by their peers at the beginning of each school year, these representatives attend regular meetings with the administration, voice student concerns, and assist in organizing class events and activities. Serving as a class representative helps students develop essential skills such as leadership, communication, and problem-solving.

The class representatives, house captains, and vice-captains, together with the Head Boy and Head Girl, form the Student Council within our prefect system. Student Council representatives serve as role models for their peers, creating positive connections between faculty and students, raising the profile within Ankuram, and organizing events to inspire school spirit among their classmates. They help ensure and practice our expectations of behavior in every classroom and throughout the school, focusing on the themes of being Responsible, Respectful, and Safe.

The Student Council plays a crucial role in helping each child meet these expectations, facilitating the creation of a safe and orderly learning environment. By fostering a sense of responsibility and leadership among students, the Student Council contributes to the overall positive atmosphere and smooth functioning of the school.

Guidance and Career Counseling

Our Guidance and Career Counseling services are dedicated to supporting students in navigating their academic and career paths. Students can schedule one-on-one sessions with our counselors to discuss academic concerns, personal issues, and career aspirations. Group counseling sessions are organized according to the school calendar. Regular workshops cover topics such as resume writing, interview skills, and job search strategies. We also provide assistance with college applications, essay writing, and scholarship opportunities. Career and skill assessments are arranged to help students identify their strengths, interests, and potential career paths.

The counseling center offers both individual and group counseling sessions. Counselors periodically meet with students individually to ensure they are on track to graduate and address any academic or personal concerns. These sessions are strictly confidential.

Our comprehensive program starts from Grade 8 and continues through the plus two program. We guide students in choosing subjects that match their strengths, interests, and career aspirations, with input from their families. Students are introduced to various technical subjects and internship opportunities, preparing them for future careers. Workshops and pre-interviews with guest interviewers help students practice and prepare for real-world job interviews. Through volunteering and internship hours, we encourage students to give back to the community and gain valuable social interactions and work experience.

Infirmary

Our Infirmary provides essential medical services to students, staffed by a licensed nurse who offers first aid, manages chronic conditions, and administers medications. Parents must submit up-to-date health records and emergency contact information. Students who feel unwell or are injured during school hours should report to the clinic. Parents will be notified if their child needs to go home or requires further medical attention. Medications brought to school must be accompanied by instructions and will be administered according to the prescribed directions. The Infirmary also conducts health awareness programs to educate students about maintaining their well-being.

Library

Our school library is a vital resource center that supports academic and personal development. Open from 8 am to 5 pm on all school days, the library offers a wide range of resources, including books, e-books, magazines, newspapers, and online databases. The collection is continually updated to ensure relevance and diversity. Students can borrow up to 2 books at a time for 2 weeks, with renewals possible if the books are not reserved by others. A fine of 20 rupees per day is charged for overdue books. Students are responsible for returning books on time to avoid fines.

The library environment is maintained as a quiet zone for studying, reading, research, and checking out books. Loud conversations are not permitted, and library privileges may be denied to students who do not comply. The library features individual and group study areas equipped with desks, chairs, cozy reading corners, Wi-Fi, computers, and charging stations. Group study can be conducted in designated areas with permission from the librarian.

Regular programs such as book clubs, author visits, research workshops, and book reviews are organized to promote reading and information literacy. The library program focuses on literature appreciation and information literacy skills, with librarians working closely with classroom teachers to integrate classroom studies into the library program. Students are responsible for taking care of and returning any books checked out to them. If a book is lost or damaged, the student will be expected to pay for it.

Playground Rules

An essential aspect of our school is our playground and play equipment, which adds enjoyment during recess and enhances students’ overall physical fitness. However, safety is our top priority. The playground will be fully supervised by teachers at all times, and students will be informed of the rules for this recreation area.

The following rules apply to ensure safety and enjoyment for everyone:

  • No Pushing, Shoving, or Tackling. These actions are strictly prohibited inside the soft surface area, in or around the swings, and near other play equipment.
  • Behavior must be conducive to safe and friendly play. Teasing, arguing, fighting, running in unauthorized areas, and any other inappropriate behaviors will not be tolerated.
  • Students must immediately report any injury or accident occurring on the playground to a teacher.

These rules are in place to ensure the safety and well-being of every child during playtime.

PE Changing Rooms

The changing rooms should be kept clean and tidy at all times. Students are not to leave clothing, backpacks, book bags, or any other personal objects in the changing rooms. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items left in these rooms.

These rooms are primarily used for changing clothes for swimming classes and for changing from school uniforms to games attire for activities like futsal, karate, etc.

Buddy System at Ankuram Academy

At Ankuram Academy, we believe in fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all our students. Transitioning from one school to another can be challenging, which is why we have implemented the Buddy System. This initiative pairs incoming students with more experienced peers, creating a network of support that extends beyond the academic realm. We carefully consider academic interests, subjects of study, and personal preferences when pairing buddies to ensure the best possible match.

Our Buddy System begins with an orientation and introduction, where new students meet their buddies. Buddies serve as academic mentors, helping their mentees with study habits and time management. They also facilitate social integration by encouraging participation in clubs, events, and extracurricular activities.

In addition to academic and social support, buddies play a crucial role in providing emotional support. They offer a listening ear and help new students navigate the school’s bureaucracy, guiding them to appropriate resources when needed. Buddies accompany new students during lunchtime and breaks, ensuring they feel comfortable and addressing any problems that may arise. Through the Buddy System, we strive to create a sense of belonging and teamwork, enhancing the overall school experience for everyone involved.

Lost & Found

Belongings left on the floor or ground outside of classrooms and not placed in lockers may be taken to the Lost and Found shelves. Students and their parents are encouraged to check the Lost and Found regularly and retrieve their belongings.

Any unclaimed belongings will be donated to local charity organizations at the end of the session to free up space. Note that the school is not responsible for lost, damaged, or ruined belongings.

Maintaining these areas and following these guidelines will help ensure a safe, respectful, and organized environment for all students.

Photographs and Videos of Students

From time to time, Ankuram Academy may release certain information about students who participate in school activities, receive honors/awards, or distinguish themselves. This may include identifying students in photographs or videos taken for publication, including web-based publications on Ankuram social media, the website, and the YouTube account. As a parent of an Ankuram student, if you wish to withhold consent for the school to use photographs and videos of your child for these purposes, you must notify the Principal in writing. Such notice should be received no later than 15 days after the first day of school. The school will not take responsibility for posts made before the letter is submitted. This policy ensures the privacy and protection of our students while allowing us to celebrate their achievements and participation in school activities.

Assessment Policy at Ankuram Academy

Purpose

This policy encourages continuous learning and improvement by evaluating students’ knowledge, skills, and growth through formal and informal assessments. It helps students identify strengths and areas for improvement and track their progress toward course objectives.

Guiding Principles: Assessments at Ankuram Academy:

  • Enhance student learning, achievement, and well-being.
  • Are valid, reliable, and fair.
  • Are planned, inclusive, and equitable.
  • Align with learning outcomes and individual needs.
  • Allow students to demonstrate understanding and skills.
  • Provide meaningful information to students and parents.

Objectives:

  • Foster a holistic understanding of student performance.
  • Provide regular, constructive feedback to students and parents.
  • Minimize test-related stress with diverse assessment methods.
  • Offer opportunities for self-assessment and reflection.
  • Help teachers evaluate and improve their teaching effectiveness.

Types of Assessments we use:

Formal Assessments: These include standardized tests, final exams, mid-term exams, and other structured assessments that provide quantifiable data on student performance.

Informal Assessments: These encompass observations, class discussions, quizzes, peer reviews, and self-assessments, offering a broader view of student progress and understanding.

The way we evaluate a student’s progress throughout a prescribed course instead of depending on summative evaluation and final examination. This way we offer our students more support, guidance, and opportunities to improve during the course or programme.

Subject-Based Classrooms

We believe teaching and learning are enhanced in subject-based classrooms as teaching materials required for each subject are equipped in the classrooms themselves. Each classroom is designed as a subject lab, allowing students to have immediate access to practical materials within the class. This system will be implemented from classes 5 to 10. Our initial practice in classes 5 and 6 showed positive outcomes, such as increased student engagement, improved performance, and enhanced teacher experiences. Research supports that subject-based classrooms foster a more focused learning environment, encourage the integration of practical activities with theoretical learning, and improve students’ organizational skills and subject comprehension.

Visitors

We welcome visitors to our school while ensuring the safety and security of our students. All visitors must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Visitors must sign in at the school office, present a valid ID, and wear a visitor badge while on school grounds.
  • Visitors will be escorted on campus when possible.
  • Visitors are not allowed to communicate with any students in private or go directly to their child’s classroom or any other restricted areas.
  • Parents wishing to visit classrooms should schedule appointments in advance with the teacher or school administration.
  • Parents and community members are encouraged to volunteer. Volunteer applications and background checks may be required.
  • For security reasons, faculty, staff, and students are not permitted to open exterior/back gate doors to visitors.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up & ID Cards

All students (besides those using the school transport) must be dropped off and picked up at the main entrance gate. Guardians will be issued pick-up passes at the beginning of the year. To ensure the safety of our students, we request that the same person consistently handles pick-up and drop-off whenever possible. This helps our security guards and front office staff recognize familiar faces. The pick-up pass must be shown to the security guards at the main entrance gate. Please have patience during pick-up times, as students might occasionally be delayed due to organizing their books and other belongings. For added security, ID cards will be issued to all students, which they must carry with them at all times. These cards help in identifying students and ensure they are safely picked up by authorized individuals.

College Recommendations

Our faculty and staff are committed to supporting students in their college application process. Teachers and counselors write personalized recommendation letters highlighting students’ strengths, achievements, and potential. Students should request recommendation letters at least four weeks in advance of the application deadline. Provide all necessary forms and information to the teacher or counselor. It is important to follow up with your recommenders to ensure letters are submitted on time.

Communication Channels

Effective communication between the school, students, and parents is a most for smooth functioning of the school. Up-to-date information about school events, announcements, and resources are provided to the students. Official school social media accounts are used to share news, celebrate achievements, and engage with the community. We encourage the parents to join/follow us. Important updates and alerts are sent directly to parents’ and students’ email addresses and cell phones.

Parent-teacher meetings are held after each assessment to discuss school initiatives, student progress, and community events. Regular newsletters, emails, and parent-teacher conferences to keep parents informed about school activities and student progress. Parents are encouraged to volunteer for school events, field trips, classroom activities and club activities.

Upcoming Events

Upcoming events are posted on our website besides the school calendars. This contains Monthly Speaker featuring distinguished guests from academia, industry, and the arts, Career Seminars for insights into different career paths and industries, Leadership Workshops for developing skills for effective leadership and teamwork, Special Events for celebrating cultural diversity, innovation, and community service or general school activities.

We encourage all our students to actively participate in these events to gain new perspectives and inspiration for your own journey.

Conflict Resolution

We create a harmonious school environment where conflicts are resolved constructively and respectfully. Trained mediators are available to help students resolve conflicts through facilitated discussions. Mediation is confidential and aims to reach a mutually acceptable resolution. We train students to act as peer mediators, assisting their classmates in resolving disputes peacefully. Workshops on conflict resolution skills, such as active listening, empathy, and negotiation, are offered regularly. Students are encouraged to report conflicts to a teacher, counselor, or administrator if they are unable to resolve the issue on their own. The school employs restorative practices to repair harm and restore relationships. This approach focuses on understanding the impact of actions, taking responsibility, and making amends. Specific protocols are in place to address bullying, ensuring that all reports are taken seriously and addressed promptly.

Spot Checks

To ensure adherence to school policies and academic standards, periodic spot checks will be conducted. Teachers may conduct spot checks to ensure students are following classroom rules and completing assignments. Random checks of homework assignments will be performed to ensure completion and accuracy. Regular spot checks of attendance records will be conducted to verify accuracy and identify any discrepancies.

Special Education Services

Ankuram provides support for students with special needs. Individualized Education Plans (IEP) are created tailored educational plans to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities. We have trained special education teachers and support staff to assist students with their learning needs. We give importance to inclusive environment to ensure all students have access to the general education and participate in school activities.

We hope this the handbook becomes a comprehensive resource for students, parents, and staff, ensuring that all aspects of student life and school operations are clearly outlined and accessible.

Parent/Teacher Meetings (PTM)

Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled meetings held during the school year to focus on students’ learning and discuss important factors affecting their behavioral and social development. During PTMs, each parent will receive feedback on their child’s progress and areas for improvement. We expect all parents to attend these meetings to achieve the following:

  • Share academic progress and growth based on classroom observations, testing data, assessments, portfolios, and assignments.
  • Learn from parents or guardians to better understand students’ strengths, needs, behaviors, and learning styles.
  • Discuss enrichment or intervention strategies to support students’ learning and address any issues that may interfere with their growth and development.

Teachers provide descriptive feedback, covering the following aspects:

  • The child’s interests, what they have learned well, and areas where they have shown progress.
  • Specific areas the child needs to work on, with suggestions on how they can improve.
  • Teachers outline their plans for helping the child, and suggest ways guardians can support learning at home.

Based on teachers’ observations and assessments, they provide clear and concise information and guidelines to both guardians and the child, aiming to foster improvement. The key objective is to ensure the child benefits from the feedback and continues to grow academically and personally.
